Designing and building my own portfolio from scratch with Claude Code
I designed and coded the entire site from scratch - layout, typography, interactions, and responsive behavior - without templates or UI frameworks.
I built the full codebase using Claude Code as my development partner, writing every line through AI-assisted pair programming rather than traditional hand-coding.
I set up a custom domain (antonengelbrecht.com), Git version control, and a deployment pipeline - owning the full stack from design to production.
I structured the portfolio around case studies with a flexible template system, so each project tells a clear story with consistent formatting.
I treated the portfolio itself as a design project - iterating on hierarchy, spacing, and content structure based on feedback from multiple senior UX professionals.
The Process
From blank repo to live site - built entirely through AI-assisted pair programming.
Started with intent: a minimal, content-first portfolio that shows process, not just polish. Chose Astro for static performance and zero client JS by default.
Worked exclusively with Claude Code - describing what I wanted, reviewing the output, iterating on structure, copy, and interactions in real-time conversation.
Designed the visual language directly in code: typography scale, spacing system, color palette, and animation timing - no Figma mockups for this one.
Built a flexible case study template so every project follows the same structure: hero, contributions, content sections. Easy to add new work without starting from scratch.
Got detailed reviews from multiple senior UX professionals. Worked through the feedback systematically, using the loop to refine hierarchy, content, and structure.
Deployed to antonengelbrecht.com with Git version control, giving me full ownership of the stack from design decisions to production deployment.
